Breath, Waves, and New Beginnings
Dec 30, 2024It was a windy, cool morning just after sunrise. As we approached the cliff top, the sound of crashing waves and the roar of the ocean greeted us.
From our elevated vantage point, we could see the white peaks of the waves—like galloping horses riding toward the shore. The sun hung low in the sky, and the blue sky was covered in wispy white cloud formations that appeared like ridges on a mountain.
We left our vehicles and made our way down to the beach, yoga mats in hand. This was my first time having a yoga class on the beach. Despite the challenge of mats flapping in the wind as we set up, the magic of being so close to the ocean, under endless open skies, and on a nearly deserted beach in the early morning made it worth every effort.
Years ago, I had learned about the ujjayi breath, a breathing technique in yoga also sometimes known as “ocean breath”. Why? Because it sounds like the ocean…
Practicing this breathing technique with the sound of the ocean in the background felt like a moment of oneness —a deep sense of connection to nature, the sky, the beach, the ocean, and my breath.
Moments like these, when we feel at one with nature, are profoundly restorative.
They fill up our creative cups, nurture inspiration, and bring deep relaxation.
From this place of calm, I’ve found clarity emerging about the next steps in my life and business, and the lifestyle I wish to create.
It hasn’t always been easy for me to embrace relaxation and trust in its value.
Yet, I’ve come to realize that these moments of stillness are as important—if not more so—than periods of action.
They’re an integral part of my preparation for the New Year.
