Are You Losing Clients at the Finish Line?

Oct 14, 2024

Over the weekend, I went for a walk by the sea with my family, and we bumped into some close friends. We decided to have an impromptu meal together at a Greek restaurant, one most of us had not tried before. The décor was lovely, with blue and white accents reminiscent of Santorini with white-washed walls and blue domes. Our waiter was attentive throughout the meal, and the food was delicious and beautifully presented.

But when we wanted to pay the bill and leave, our waiter disappeared. It took a while to catch the attention of another server, and although we eventually settled, the connection we had with our original waiter was lost. One of our party even forgot her takeaway box, which she had been looking forward to enjoying later.

This situation got me thinking about how this applies to our businesses. You can put in so much effort to gain a client, create a pleasant experience, and build a relationship. But if you don’t close the deal well, it leaves a sense of unfinished business. In business and in life, endings are just as important as beginnings.

In the ancient wisdom of the Tao, if you don’t end something well, it will be difficult to start something new with ease. That’s why it’s crucial to pay attention to how you conclude things—whether it’s a presentation, a client experience, or even a meal. When you end well, you create a positive energy field for your next venture, your next project.

Here are three lessons we can take away from this story:

  1. Consistency Matters: Just like the waiter’s great service throughout the meal, your client experience should be smooth from start to finish. But if you drop the ball at the end, it can overshadow all the hard work.
  2. Endings Shape Beginnings: A positive, well-handled ending sets the stage for your next opportunity or relationship. When you close things properly, you create space for new growth and success.
  3. Stay Connected Until the End: Don’t lose connection with your clients or audience just before the finish line. Be sure to see the process through, ensuring they feel taken care of from start to finish.

May you enjoy positive endings and new beginnings!
